Day boat destinations

On a day out boating from Great Haywood on the Trent & Mersey Canal near Stafford, you can reach the historic market town of Rugeley. The journey travels four miles, passes through two locks and takes around two hours.

Along the way, you’ll pass the National Trust’s Shugborough Estate and Cannock Chase Forest, a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty. Once at Rugeley, you can moor up to explore the town or turn at bridge 68 and head back to Wolseley to visit the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s Wolseley Centre or lunch at the canalside Wolseley Arms pub.

Alternatively, you can head north along the Trent & Mersey Canal, cruising through the Staffordshire countryside and the village of Weston-on-Trent.  There’s a choice of pubs to visit, including the Saracens Head at Weston.

General information

Day boats at Great Haywood We have two day boats for hire at Great Haywood: Daphne and Abi.

Passenger numbers Maximum 10 passengers (including infants and pets).

Pets You can bring dogs but they each count as a passenger.

What’s onboard? Our self-drive day boats have indoor and outdoor seating, a toilet, gas hob and a fridge or electric cool box. Buoyancy aids are also available on request.

Your day out boating Check in at 9am and provide a security deposit (£100 per boat). Return at 4pm March to October. 3pm return over the winter months.

Tuition is included in our day boat hire. We’ll ask you to complete a handover certificate before releasing the boat).

Prices £99 per day Monday to Friday. £150 on weekends and bank holidays.

Car parking & damage waiver is included.

FAQs

Do I need a licence to drive a canal boat?

You don’t need a licence to steer a canal boat and it’s easy to learn how to operate a boat.  When you arrive at one of our boat yards, one of our experienced instructors will guide you through everything you need to know.

 

What time can I collect the boat?

You can check in at 9am and return the boat by 4pm March to October. By 3pm over the winter months.

 

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, you can bring up to three well-behaved dogs but they count as passengers (maximum 10 passengers are allowed per boat).
